Instagram to Introduce Ads Within the Next Year
Enjoy your ad-free Instagram feed while it lasts, because within the next year, the popular photo-sharing app will be introducing ads. This comes as no surprise as the near $750 million dollar acquisition by Facebook last year meant that it would only be a matter of time before the app was monetized.
In an Interview with The Wall Street Journal, Instagram’s Chief Operating Officer Emily White, who joined the company from Facebook after last year’s aquisition, said “We want to make money in the long term, but we don’t have any short-term pressure.”
This means that it is effectively up to Ms. White to find a way to turn the free service into an actual profit generating business in the next year, without sacrificing the app’s “cool factor”. So the challenge lies in the question of how to introduce marketing into an app where people don’t know they’re being marketed to?
It seems like since the acquisition by Facebook, Instagram has been focused on increasing it’s user base, announcing last week that they have reached 150 million active monthly users. Now that they’ve reached this milestone, it will be interesting to see how they roll out advertising, without losing what we love so much about Instagram.
