While your resume may have worked for landing you that job at the super-market in high school, it will no longer suffice for landing you a career. Instead, LinkedIn has become the hub for professional networking across industries around the globe, and has contributed to countless number of recruiters and higherees landing jobs.
For college students who are just entering the job market, however, LinedIn can be one of your most valuable resources for landing a career straight out of college or University. While many of your peers may not have impressive LinkedIn profiles, by beefing up yours, you will most definitely put yourself in front of the pack.
Here are some tips for improving your LinkedIn profile for college or University students
Show off your work:
If you have a fantastic presentation or a great project, post it to your profile to show what you’ve done. This will give potential employers a visual guide to your work, and more importantly, they will be able to see your professional development from an early age. It will show them the different skills and talents that you can bring to their company.
Ask for recommendations from professors:
A recommendation doesn’t have to come from a previous employer, and can instead come a prof or advisor. Ask a professor who knows you personally and can speak to your character or work ethic. Better yet if they work in your desired field. Having the personal recommendation will set you apart from the crowd.
Connect with Industry Leaders:
Find those who are working in the field you are interested in, and connect with them on LinkedIn (remember to always include a reason for connecting with them, and some detail that connects you to that person). If you are a connection with them on LinkedIn, you may just have a new friend in your corner when it comes time for a job recommendation. Of course, never ask for a job outright, and never spam somebody with annoying requests – Just be yourself.
Read and comment on Industry specific articles:
Find the articles where people are talking about your industry, and engage in conversations and ask smart questions. Be an active participant, rather than a passive one. Remember, be yourself and engage those in the industry, and you’ll hit the ground running once you graduate.
